We All Scream for Shawn Michelle’s!

Kudos to Shawn Michelle’s Homemade Ice Cream (11925 Western Ave) for being the FIRST food find in all of Chicagoland to be featured in Time-Out Chicago’s new column by senior Food & Drink correspondent Heather Shouse. Owner Yahya Muhammad recounts how he came to be an ice cream maestro. Muhammad credits baseball games in Avalon Park and later his Omega fraternity brothers at Western Illinois, where he debuted small batches of his first flavor: honey-cinnamon graham cracker [note: it’s still delicious, we had some today].

With a masters in sociology, Muhammad worked as a children’s social worker before opening his first ice cream venture in the Chatham neighborhood. Following the tragic death of his sister - Shawn Michelle - in a 1999 car wreck, Muhammad closed the business. Soon after he followed his father and became a police officer in Chicago’s 6th District.
